International Development

The research center International Development is one of Europe's leading centers for research and policy advice on international development. We study the flows of goods, capital, and people that connect countries at different levels of development, and how institutions and political regimes shape economic outcomes, including in autocracies and conflict settings. We work mainly with micro-level and geospatial data and frequently generate our own through surveys and field experiments. The center has a strategic focus on Africa, the continent with the greatest development needs. Africa’s relevance is growing each year because of rapid population growth and intensifying geopolitical competition. The research center also coordinates the Kiel Institute Africa Initiative and the Kiel Institute China Initiative.
