Launch of the Coffee Development Report 2020

For many, it is hard to imagine to start a day without coffee. But who and which countries actually have benefitted more from the global coffee production and consumption? How has global coffee trade developed over the past decades? Does global coffee trade contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals? How can coffee growing countries, of which many are developing or emerging countries, benefit more from being integrated into the global coffee value chain and from taking over more coffee processing work? What kind of support can be provided by multinational enterprises? How can policy and international cooperation help in this regard?

These are some of the key questions that KCG Researchers, Prof. Aoife Hanley, Ph.D. (KCG, Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) & Kiel University), Dr. Wan-Hsin Liu (KCG & IfW) and Finn Ole Semrau (KCG & IfW), and Dr. Dennis Görlich (IfW) empirically investigated in a project “Fostering the Development of the Coffee Global Value Chains” in cooperation with the International Coffee Organisation (ICO). The project was financially supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
Interested stakeholders and the public are welcome to join the online launch event that will start with opening addresses (12:00-12:45/CET), followed by the introduction of the CDR 2020 (12:45-14:00/CET). For the latter there will also be a panel discussion, at which Hanley will represent the Kiel Working Group and discuss our key findings with Sebastian Lesch (German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, BMZ), Prof. Rocco Macchiavello, Ph.D. (London School of Economics and Political Science), Dr. Christoph Sänger (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development), and Gerardo Patacconi & Rebecca Pandolph (ICO).
