In international location rankings, Denmark consistently ranks among the top countries, a fact attributable in particular to the business-friendly nature of its legal framework and the high quality of its regulations. The Danish regulatory approach is based on the principle that costs should be avoided before they arise. During the legislative process, the costs of regulation are reviewed by the Danish Business Authority, and in addition, a business advisory committee identifies regulatory burdens and develops proposals for simplification and optimization that policymakers cannot simply ignore. A digitally friendly legislation, a central digital portal for the business community, and support services for companies contribute to Denmark’s merits as a business location. The business-friendly nature of Danish regulation and the efficient design of Denmark’s “e-governance” offer valuable lessons for Schleswig-Holstein’s business location policy.
