The Maritime Economy of Schleswig-Holstein: Structures and Economic Significance

According to the authors' definition, Schleswig-Holstein's "Maritime Economy" consists on the one hand of a core area that directly covers maritime activities such as shipping, port management, fisheries, sea-related production and research ("Maritime Economy I"). On the other hand, there are products and services from more broadly based industries that are suppliers or customers for this maritime core area ("Maritime Economy II"). They note that maritime turnover in the core areas of Maritime Economy I has increased significantly in recent years, whereas it has tended to stagnate on average in Maritime Economy II. In contrast, the employment development in the Maritime Economy II was more dynamic. Schleswig-Holstein's maritime economy tends to be organized on a small scale: Instead of large companies, small and medium-sized enterprises dominate. The authors conclude that although Schleswig-Holstein's maritime economy is smaller than one would expect from a coastal state, it nevertheless makes a substantial contribution to Schleswig-Holstein's economic results.
