Schleswig-Holstein, like all federal states, benefited from the upswing of recent years. In comparison with the development in Germany as a whole and in the other federal states, Schleswig-Holstein's economic successes are put into perspective: A catching-up process did not take place in the 2000s. Due to the creeping loss of importance of the manufacturing industry, better-paid jobs were lost, while newly created service jobs are often less well paid and often only allow part-time employment. Due to Schleswig-Holstein's narrow industrial base, Schleswig-Holsteins’s economy benefited less from the export driven upswing of the recent years. Moreover, an evaluation of state rankings shows that the Schleswig-Holstein economy lacks breadth and depth in terms of innovative strength and future orientation.
