The authors explain that the economy in Schleswig-Holstein cannot evade the influences of globalisation. In spite of its geographically peripheral location – often deplored – Schleswig-Holstein has to assert its position in global competition for export markets, capital and attraction of companies to ensure domestic employment and standard of living. The exporters in Schleswig-Holstein are holding a key position in this. As in Germany as a whole, business-prospects have been driven for years primarily by exports. A strong position on global markets compensates for missing dynamics of domestic demand and ensures the participation in the gains from global integration.
