Holidays in Corona times: Perspectives for Tourism in Germany

The authors show that in the German federal states tourism has a different weight and accordingly the economic impact of the travel restrictions under the Corona measures varies. Relaxations for tourism have a higher priority in holiday destinations such as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein than in regions with little tourism. The example of Schleswig-Holstein shows that a longer "lockdown" could result in losses for the tourism industry that cannot be compensated. The authors give an economic justification for regionally different exit rules in the corona crisis, whereby regionally varying relaxation strategies would be justified especially in the area of tourism. The low infection rates in the holiday regions of Schleswig-Holstein also argue for a resumption of tourism. The authors recommend targeted measures that prevent large gatherings of people in public spaces without discriminating against certain groups of tourist service providers.
