Using the example of the emergence of antibiotic resistance, we show that there are specific sustainability problems in medicine, which can ultimately lead to an impairment of the ability of future patients to satisfy their basic health needs and realize a flourishing life. We go on to show that the orientation towards an idea of sustainability can lead to “sustainability dilemma” and we discuss how this can be dealt with.
