More than half of the German blue mussel production originates in Schleswig-Holstein. In his paper the Kiel economist Federico Foders analyzes that existing market distortions, however, prevent the realization of the full potential of mussel aquaculture in the region. An economically improved regulation could create incentives for a higher, sustainable and environmentally sound production and would offer the coastal region a badly needed stimulus.
