It is analyzed how the Baltic States managed to build up functioning market economies and to fulfil the prerequisites for membership in the EU in the decade after recovered independence. A further focus is on the question whether Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania could cope with the economic slowdown in the course of the world economic crisis during the years 2008 and 2009.
