Sonali Chowdhry is a trade economist using high frequency customs data to investigate disruptions to global supply chains and firm adjustment to trade policy shocks. In addition to academic research, she has served as an external consultant on trade issues for multiple government agencies including the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade (INTA), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Her ongoing research on geopolitical shocks to trade networks has been extensively reported by leading news outlets including Bloomberg, Reuters, Al Jazeera, Die Zeit and The Hindu.

 

Sonali earned her PhD in Economics from LMU Munich with distinction as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow and read for the MPhil in Economics at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Previously, Sonali has held visiting positions at the Harvard Kennedy School, Bruegel and CEPII and was awarded the Max Weber Fellowship by the European University Institute. She teaches International Economics at the Hertie School and splits her time between Berlin and New Delhi.
