Excellence Awards in Global Economic Affairs 2025

Sciences Po Department of Economics
28 rue des Saints-Pères
75007 Paris

We will present the 2025 Excellence Awards in Global Economic Affairs to four young, outstanding economists. They will join a unique international community of talented young economics researchers that began in 2007 through the initiative of the Kiel Institute.

The Excellence Award winners for 2025 are:

  • Rodrigo Adão (Chicago Booth) for his excellent research in the fields of International Trade and Spatial Economics. Rodrigo´s innovative contribution to counterfactual predictions in open economies and improved methods for estimating more precisely the effects of local labor demand shocks such as the China trade shock are now part of the essential toolbox available to economics.

  • Christopher Clayton (Yale) for his influential research in the fields of International Finance and Macroeconomics. Clayton has not only designed an influential theory of dynamic inflation targeting by central banks but is also one of the pioneers in the nascent literature of geoeconomics.

  • Lydia Cox (Wisconsin - Madison) for her outstanding research in International Trade and Macroeconomics. One of her recent major contributions has been to carefully quantify the important negative cascading effects of tariffs through production networks when tariffs are placed on upstream inputs such as steel.

  • Jacob Moscona (MIT) for his substantial contributions to the fields of Development and Political Economy. Moscano´s outstanding research includes firstly the analysis of new barriers to a truly global innovation system (i.e. technology mismatch) hampering global productivity and secondly, to disentangle the responses of agricultural trade policies to precisely localized severe heat shocks and its welfare consequences in a warming world.

Each of the four winners will be awarded a Research Fellowship at the Kiel Institute funded through separate scholarship programs (Otto Group fellowship, Porsche fellowship, Sauer Compressors fellowship, and Advanced Studies Program fellowship). As Research Fellows, the talented young researchers who receive their Excellence Award at a premier event in Paris, take advantage of a fully funded trip to the Kiel Institute to present their innovative research and get active support to promote the diffusion of their outstanding contributions. The Excellence Awards are open to researchers and academics up to 37 years.

The Excellence Awards ceremony will be held on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025 in Paris. It is embedded in the 4th Kiel-CEPR Conference on Geoeconomics, organized by the Kiel Institute and CEPR in cooperation with Sciences Po and the German Embassy in Paris.
